English schools in the USA and Canada
PALS, Program in American Language Studies, is the intensive English as a Second Language program at Rutgers University in Newark, NJ. The ESL curriculum focuses on the academic preparation needed to study at universities in the U.S. The Intensive program offers English courses at six levels of proficiency from Beginners to High Advanced. (New students are tested for placement into the most appropriate level.) PALS also offers TOEFL preparation courses, which provide students with the skills necessary for successful completion of the TOEFL exam for admission to American universities.
All PALS instructors hold advanced university degrees in T.E.S.L., Linguistics, and other related fields, and are experienced in teaching English as a Second Language.
In addition to courses, students have access to the PALS Computer Lab, which provides software, textbooks, and other supplementary language learning materials. Students utilize the Lab as a quiet study space and occasionally attend classes in the Lab.
PALS students can participate in the many activities organized each semester by the PALS ESL Club (http://pals.rutgers.newark.edu/eslclub.htm). Events are designed to engage participants in active English language practice and introduce them to the lives and experiences of people from all around the world.
The university is very close to New York City, with easy access by train and bus to cities up and down the eastern U.S. coast. Close to three major international airports in the NY/NJ area.
More information about all the above features of PALS is available at our website. Students can also read a description of PALS in several different languages by clicking on links at the top of the home page.
