Re: Five Simple Spelling Rules - Lesson
In Response To: Five Simple Spelling Rules - Tips (http://www.writing.com/)
today I wrote 'verging', but it didn't look right, so I changed it to 'vergeing' which looked better, but was underlined by the spell checker. Then I spent half an hour wandering round web sites looking for the rules/exceptions. I liked the idea of Five Simple Spelling Rules. 'Verging' obeys the drop the silent 'e' when adding 'ing' rule, but violates the keep the 'e' because it softens the 'g' pronunciation takes precedence rule. Isn't English wonderful? But its spelling rules ain't simple.
