Lessons & Classroom Games for Teachers
A few years back I posted a long list of international and English words commonly used in Korea. This is a preliminary follow up for China. The list is shorter because China has been closed to the West for more than 60 years and there still is only one English Channel, CCTV-9. (Things are quite different in Hong Kong.) This hinders education about English and world affairs.
To make a lesson I put the title on the board and pass out chalk asking students to write up the words they know. The words have to be non-Chinese but widely known by the Chinese.
Disney, Mickey Mouse, cola, coke, coca-cola, chocolate, whisky, brandy(said like Ba-ran-dy), hotdog, hamburger, potato, tomato, pizza, makeup, lipstick, olympics, plane, UFO, nylon, laser, computer, mobile, air conditioner, camera, guitar, piano, DVD, TV, CEO, Japan, Russia, USA, Canada, Australia etc. (some countries go by Chinese names here in China)
Students enjoy this activity and will do this for about 40 minutes. I don't show them the words I've collected till they are finished.
