It's always a good idea to find out why your students are learning English - what are their needs.

The more you can find out about their needs the better your chance of satisfying them.

Conducting a needs analysis is a good start on negotiating a learning contract - i.e...

...this is what i am going to teach you (and expect you to learn) over a given period / this is what i am going to learn (and expect you to teach me) over a given period

Marketing speak perhaps but I presume he will be a paying customer.

Does he have exams to pass - what are they? what does he need to know for them? etc. etc.

Once you know what he needs to learn the web is full of free material that will help you with teaching him.
