That all depends on Trump. Putin made no bones about his hatred for Obama and his even deeper hatred for Hillary. At least he is waiting to see what Trump will do before he forms an opinion. Yes, you are correct, Putin is infinitely smarter than Trump, but if you bother to check out his recent press conferences, you'll get an even deeper insight into his mindset. Essentially he's sick to death of the "my dick's bigger than your dick" attitude, and even more sick and tired of being seen as a "threat" every time he responds to America increasing its military capacity.

Interesting article about how Putin, who is infinitely smarter than Trump, now has the power to discredit Trump's presidency and highlight Russia's power.

Russia has just arrested a secret service official for treason. Whether it is true or not, if Russia decides in the process of the trial to publicize the activities of Russian intelligence agencies in fact manipulating the U.S. election, crushing Hillary's campaign and enabling Trump, the result for Trump's legitimacy (and mental health) would be disastrous. Additionally, European countries would feel the shadow of Putin's power in their own election cycle.

Again, the truth here is immaterial. The power to tarnish Trump is in Putin's hands.
