Native English Speakers vs Non-Native Speakers
By:David Day <dcday2005@netzero.com>
In Response To: A Good Answer for All (lawrence)

Greetings from San Antonio, Texas,USA:

During the course of this past month a friend of mine from Indonesia and I have answered many adds for teaching positions all over China. Our goal is to teach as a team. He is a Non-Native Speaker with a degree in English Faculty and speaks English better than most American's that I know. He currently teaches at a school in Indonesia and does quite well.
As for me, I am a "Native" Speaker born and raised in the USA with about three years of college and Instructor Certification from the USAF and ten years of classroom instruction from 1983 to 1992. On the surface, it would appear to me that my Indonesian friend is more qualified with his concentrated degree in English, but the responses we are getting from recruiters and school officials alike is that they will hire me and not him because he is not a "Native Speaker. After reading many posts, I am convinced that there is not one standard. If anyone knows of any school that is sincere about having two professionals actually teach students a skill that they will use well into the future, please forward my e-mail and we will consider an offer. We are looking to teach at the same school or same city and share accommodations.

Best of Luck to all "Native" and "Non-Native" Teachers of English.
