How to Vacation in Fiji
By:Beverley Lee

Fiji is a beautiful group of islands in the South Pacific inhabited by a mixture of cultures. Fijians are helpful. They value the tourist trade, as it is their main source of income, and speak English. The islands offer a multitude of activities as well as beautiful sandy beaches and a warm sea. Whether you are looking for an activity-based holiday, touring or beach vacation, Fiji has it all. One vacation is not enough to see everything on these islands.

Decide what you want from your holiday. Choose from activities such as viewing historic sites, scuba diving, jet skiing, kayaking, surfing or simply relaxing in the sun. If you have enough time, you can sample them all. Determine which island you want to base yourself on for the activities you want. You can easily travel from one island to another in style. Go by plane, catamaran, outboard canoe or open-sided or air-conditioned buses.

Visit or stay on Fiji's mainland, Vitu Levu, where the majority of Fijians live and most of their history has unfolded. Around this area are busy cities and towns full of cafes, monuments and shops. The island's Nadi airport is where most travelers arrive. Nadi is the gateway city to Fiji, with numerous shops and restaurants. The Coral Coast in the south of the island is worth a visit. It has a series of hotels and is close to the Pacific, offering some of the best diving, fishing, whitewater rafting and golfing on the islands. Take a trip to Suva, the island's capital, which offers plenty of options for nightlife, restaurants, museums and historic monuments.

The Mamanuca Group of islands has half of Fiji's resorts and is a short hop from Nadi. Taveuni island is said to be the finest island by most visitors and the local inhabitants, as it has a rain forest, coconut plantations, beautiful waterfalls and scuba diving.

Travel to Ovalau if you can, as it is home of the old capital city Levuka. Vanua Levu, Fiji's second largest island, is slightly more difficult to get to. It is worth a visit if you have time, as Savusavu is one the most picturesque towns on the islands.

Choose a time to visit Fiji. The cooler season, from May to October, is the islands' most popular time. The islands becomes hotter and more humid between November and April. That is also the rainy season, and occasional hurricanes are possible. Air fares will vary, but any time is a good time to visit Fiji. The most cost-effective time to travel is between February and March, as those are quiet months for the hotels and resorts. Temperatures range from 23 to 27 degrees C throughout the year.

Think about the amount of money you are taking into Fiji. The currency is Fijian dollars, and exchanges at approximately double the US dollar. You can take any amount of money into the country, but only bring the same amount out. Fiji establishments accept most credit cards and have ATMs.
