Ways for the Principal to Motivate the Students
By:Sherry Gray

Every teacher and school administrator envisions a school full of motivated students who are eager to learn and happy to participate. Unfortunately, such a perfect learning environment rarely presents itself. In reality, keeping students engaged and motivated is a challenge for schools at every grade level. Teachers and administration -- especially school principals -- working together to engage the student body can have a profound impact on the quality of education within the school.

Establish School Culture
A healthy attitude of friendly, open communication starts at the top of any organization, and schools are no exception. To motivate the students, principals can start by motivating teachers. Encourage a free exchange of ideas, reward excellence and offer support.

Challenge Students
A fun and inventive challenge can be an effective motivational tool. One elementary school principal in Florida challenged the school's 500 students to read 10,000 books during the school year. When they achieved this impressive feat, he kept his end of the bargain by kissing a pig. A principal in Washington comes up with a silly new challenge every year. He's been slimed, dressed like Elvis to perform "Blue Suede Shoes" and donned an inflatable sumo suit, much to the delight of his students.

Give Students Choices
Give the students a sense of ownership in the school by allowing them to make decisions. Put choices out for a student body vote. Allow grade-level choices for areas of study or academic challenges.

Embrace Technology
To reach today's kids, foster learning activities that embrace today's tools. Integrate pop culture and modern technology in the classroom by using the Internet, electronic tablets or even cell phones to support classroom projects. Principals with knowledge of the latest technologies will be able to reach their students on a personal level.

Get Personal
Getting to know an entire school full of students can be intimidating, but taking a personal interest can make students feel at home. Speak encouraging words and offer constructive criticism. Take an interest in students' lives and offer support when they seem troubled. Above all, set a good example for students to aspire to.
