How to Find ESL Teachers
By:Sophie Southern

English as a second language, or ESL, is taught all over the world, from Asia and Africa to Europe and South America. Having native English teachers on staff lends credibility to foreign schools and provides students with an authentic English-language source. Given the diverse nature of many ESL schools, recruiting English-speaking teachers can be a complicated process. Fortunately, the internet makes it significantly easier to attract ESL instructors, despite some of the long-distance hurdles that need to be overcome.

Create a clear job description for your teaching position. Include information about your school, the age and types of students, job requirements and salary. State whether or not your school intends to take care of living accommodations and visa paperwork. Describe the living conditions and any advantages you are prepared to offer teachers. ESL teachers tend to search by location first, then working conditions. By offering more benefits with your teaching positions, you will receive more experienced and qualified applicants.

Get in touch with a recruitment agency. Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) and ESL recruiters find qualified teachers teaching positions in a wide variety of countries. Recruiters handle virtually all aspects of the hiring process, including diploma and paperwork verification. Recruiting agencies are a particularly wise choice if you want to reduce your school's teacher turnover.

Post ads on TEFL, EFL, (English as a Foreign Language) and ESL websites. Most teachers search job postings online before looking anywhere else for English teaching positions. Some of these websites are free for recruiters and others require advertising fees. In general, all ESL job websites allow you to post the details of your job position as well as information about your school and job requirements.

Run print ads in local English newspapers or newsletters. Most large cities in foreign countries have some form of local English newspaper for Anglophone residents that feature classified ads. It is particularly useful to place ads in local English papers or newsletters if you are looking for ESL teachers that are already living in a specific country.

Be prepared to provide references. Many EFL and ESL teachers are reluctant to accept positions without verifying working conditions, references or school reputation. Provide contact information, such as an email address, for three of your current teachers so that prospective teachers can get in touch and verify the conditions of the job and your school.
