Teaching Communication with Authentic Materials (Part 5 of 5)

ESL lesson using job advertisements (14-18 years)

Go to Introduction

Controversial statements:

 Language and skills

listening comprehension, expressing agreeing/disagreeing

 Level

intermediate / advanced

 Time

10 minutes

 Materials

none

 Preparation

none

Procedure: Class work. The teacher writes a controversial statement regarding the topic JOBS on the blackboard.

Examples:

- A good job means good salary.

- It doesn’t pay off to have a university degree nowadays.

- It is much easier for boys than for girls to get a good job.

Learners have to express their opinion on the given statements giving reasons/examples why they agree or disagree with it. The activity should be carried out in a circle and learners should link their opinion to the preceding one. In case there are more learners than 14 in the group, forming two circles is strongly recommended. Teacher can use “talking cards” that would guarantee every learner to participate equally.

Job interview:

 Language and skills

communication skills

 Level

pre-intermediate / advanced

 Time

15 minutes

 Materials

role-play cards

 Preparation

revision of language of interviews

Procedure: Pair work. Learners skim a job advertisement, paying a special attention to skills and qualification required. Then study a card with the role to be acted out.

Student A:

You want a job. You have seen one of the advertisements in the local paper. Unfortunately you cannot write, you have broken your finger. You go to the Personnel Manager (B) who will be so kind to fill in the application form for you. Be ready to persuade that you are the right person for the job.

Student B:

You are the Personnel Manager in a company that is advertising a job vacancy. A (your partner) knocks on your door and wants you to help him/her with filling in an application form for the post. His/her finger is in a plaster cast so s/he cannot write. Prepare questions you want to ask A (e.g. personal details, qualification, working experience etc.)

Learners can use the following form, student B prepares questions and student A dictates and spells data.
