Schools in Thailand are always looking for good English teachers that are qualified to teach young children, high school students or adults. Children and adults living in Thailand may be interested in learning how to read, write and speak English to advance their education or career, or simply for fun. Native English teachers who are interested in teaching in Thailand can take courses that will prepare them to teach children or adults the English language.
In order to get a job as a teacher in Thailand a person needs to have a bachelor's degree or master's degree. They must be a qualified teacher in their own country and have a TEFL qualification. People who have a professional appearance and experience teaching at a school in Thailand have a better chance of landing a good teaching contract. The vast majority of foreign English teachers in Thailand are male, so females who apply for a teaching job in the country have a good chance of being hired.
Thai students are much different than European or North American students. They are highly respectful of their teachers but their cultural learning atmosphere is much more relaxed than in most other countries. For example, it is normal for a student to show up a half an hour late for class and there are no repercussions for such behavior. English teachers must learn to adapt to the cultural differences and continue doing the best teaching job possible. Native English teachers who are teaching in Thailand are expected to be an active member of the school, attending the early morning flag raising ceremony each day and any of the school's special events. It is important for teachers to learn about the culture so that they can do what is expected of them. Many teachers assume that they need to be fluent in the Thai language in order to become an English teacher in Thailand. Although people should make an effort to learn some of the Thai language, they do not have to be fluent in the language before teaching there.
