If you have applied to or are intending to teach for one of XDF's summer camps in Beijing be aware of the following:
Four of us have just quit after the third day due to breach of contract and very bad conditions.
Firstly, the camps are not in Beijing, they are an hour and half drive away in the middle of nowhereville.
They promised hotel accommodation, even in the contract it said single hotel room but it is in fact student dormitories with bunk beds. The electricity goes off at class times and bells ring constantly.
The food is provided in the students canteen and we had to pay for it. The sole shop charges extortionate prices and when we wanted to go out in the evening we were initially refused to be let out by the security.
We asked to be moved to a hotel as stated in the contract but were given the excuse that a suitable hotel that can accommodate foreigners was not available within reasonable distance and the only one that could accept us all would result in getting up at 5.30am each day because of traffic.
Be very careful if you accept these positions. They promise everything but deliver nothing. Given that they seem desperate for teachers and they subject them to these conditions, it is no surprise they cannot find any.
